What to Expect From Your Dental Implant Crown

What to Expect From Your Dental Implant Crown

When most of us think of a dental crown, we think of the protective cover that’s used to repair teeth damaged or altered by deep infections, large cavities, or root canal therapy. Dental crowns also play an integral role in the dental implant process. The crown is the visible part that restores your smile and confidence.

As a top-rated dental implant specialist, Abir Faraj, DDS, helps patients at Novi Family Dentistry in Novi, Michigan, understand the implant process so they feel confident about their outcome even before the implant is placed.

Here, Dr. Faraj explains the important role of your implant crown and what to expect during and after the implant procedure.

The process

Dental implants comprise two main features: the metal post implanted into your jawbone and the durable, natural-looking crown attached to it. Some implants also use a third component (called an abutment) to join the two.

During implant placement, Dr. Faraj makes an opening in your gum tissue and jawbone below. Next, she places the implant post — typically made of a biocompatible metal called titanium — in your jaw.

The area is closed and allowed to heal for several weeks, giving your bone tissue time to fuse with the implant post, increasing its strength. Once your implant has fully healed, it’s time to prepare for your crown.

Digital scans and impressions ensure your new crown fits properly and blends in beautifully with your surrounding teeth. The goal is to create a crown that matches your natural teeth in shape, size, and color, while aligning properly with your bite.

When your crown is ready, Dr. Faraj attaches it to the implant post — often using an abutment — and checks its fit and appearance to ensure optimal comfort and function. After placement, your new dental implant crown will work and look just like your natural teeth.

Long-term benefits

After your crown is placed, you can return to normal eating fairly soon, though it’s best to avoid very hard or sticky foods for a few days while the area heals.

Unlike dentures and removable bridges, implants are attached to your jawbone just like your natural teeth, which means no worries about slippage or sore spots that can happen when restorations move and shift.

You care for your implant in the same way you care for your natural teeth. Brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and scheduling routine dental visits help protect both your crown and the implant underneath. And of course, regular professional cleanings protect your gum health and reduce your risk of gum disease, which could threaten the implant just as it threatens your natural teeth.

In addition to restoring your bite and smile, dental implants maintain the contours of your face, preventing sagging that often occurs following the loss of a tooth, particularly a back tooth. With an implant, you can avoid the hollowed-out appearance that instantly makes you look years older.
