Dentures Q & A
What are dentures?
Dentures are artificial teeth that can replace missing permanent teeth. The Novi Family Dentistry team offers different dentures to meet your personalized needs and give you the beautiful, aesthetically pleasing smile you long for.
Dentures are made of acrylic plastic, porcelain, or metal materials to match the natural appearance of real teeth and gum tissue.
What are the different types of dentures?
Some of the different types of dentures you can choose from at Novi Family Dentistry include:
- Partial dentures: replace just some missing teeth
- Full dentures: replace all of your natural teeth
- Conventional dentures: removable full dentures
- Implant-supported dentures: fixed dentures supported by implants
- Immediate dentures: dentures placed right away after extraction
If you choose immediate dentures, you don’t have to go without teeth. Conventional dentures can replace immediate dentures 8-12 weeks after extraction and gum tissue heals. Every patient is different, which is why Dr. Faraj and his team customize each set of dentures.
Are dentures right for me?
To find out if you’re a good candidate for dentures, the Novi Family Dentistry team examines your teeth and gums, reviews your oral health history, discusses your lifestyle and desired outcome, and takes dental X-rays. They talk about your options in detail to help you choose the right type of dentures for your needs.
What should I expect when getting fitted for dentures?
In some cases, you may require tooth extraction or dental implant placement prior to getting dentures. After a period of healing, Dr. Faraj can fit you for your new teeth. He takes a mold of your remaining teeth or gums and sends the information to a dental lab, where technicians create custom-fit dentures.
When the dentures are ready, Dr. Faraj ensures they fit comfortably on your gums or attaches them to dental implants.
How should I care for my new dentures?
Follow your provider’s instructions to properly care for your new dentures. With implant-supported dentures, brush your teeth at least twice daily. If you have removable dentures, thoroughly brush your gums, tongue, and sides and roof of your mouth at least twice per day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and dentures cleaning solution to keep removable dentures clean.
Call Novi Family Dentistry if your dentures get damaged, and see the dental team every six months for routine dental exams.
