Porcelain Crowns Q & A

What is a crown?

A dental crown is a cap or cover that fits over an endangered tooth to protect and strengthen it. Crowns cover the entire visible portion of a tooth, improving its function and restoring its size, shape, and appearance. Novi Family Dentistry uses crowns made of porcelain, which is durable and looks like natural enamel.

Your dentist will recommend a crown if your tooth is:

  • Cracked
  • Chipped
  • Worn down
  • Decayed
  • Discolored

Your dentist might also recommend a crown to reinforce your tooth after you receive a large filling or undergo a root canal. Crowns prevent at-risk teeth from sustaining further damage. You can continue to use your tooth the same way you would your natural teeth after your dentist places a crown.

What should I expect from my crown installation procedure?

When you have a crown installation, you can expect to make two separate visits to Novi Family Dentistry.

At the first appointment, the team prepares your tooth to fit the crown. This can mean filing down some of the enamel and removing any decay. However, if your tooth is severely damaged or broken, your dentist may instead fill in the tooth so it’s large and strong enough to support the crown.

After preparing your tooth for the crown, the team takes impressions and sends them to a top-of-the-line dental lab. While you wait for the dental lab to create your permanent crown, you’ll wear a temporary crown to protect your tooth. Once your permanent crown is ready, you return to Novi Family Dentistry, where your dentist bonds it to your tooth using dental adhesive.

How long do porcelain crowns last?

Dental crowns last on average 5-15 years. To ensure the longevity of your crown, it’s necessary to take good care of it.

Good dental hygiene is just as important for crowns as it is for natural teeth. The portion of your tooth under the crown can still get cavities, and you need to protect the gum tissue surrounding the crown from disease and its accompanying inflammation and pain.

Continue to brush at least twice a day, floss at least once a day, and get a routine cleaning at Novi Family Dentistry at least twice a year.

Though porcelain crowns are durable and you can treat them like natural teeth, it’s important to take special precautions to avoid breaking them. If you have a habit of chewing on hard objects or grinding your teeth, crowns are a good reason to stop. Be sure to contact your dentist right away if you have any discomfort or there seems to be something wrong with your crown.
